Nationalism and pride stemming from their recent independence from Russia (1917) are reasons enough for Finland's extreme innovation in art and design.
I traveled to Finland this past December, soaking in the sights of Turku and Helsinki, bathing in the warm sauna culture, indulging in traditional Finnish cuisine and dancing up a storm at a campy karaoke bar. With only a few hours of sunlight during the dark winter months, I raced my way around the Design District for glimpses of top-class furniture, clothing, kitchen wares and jewelry.
The visual arts and architecture in Finland is cutting-edge and built to last. I came home with some classy Iittala glassware and colorful Marimekko shower towels. Here now are a few interviews I shot and edited with the owners, designers and best public relations faces in the city; known for being the Best Nordic Oddity in 2007.

Thanks for this 'mini-doc' about Finland, Sony. I'm often impressed by Scandinavian design, love Marimekko products.
I find good design critically important in every field. It can make the difference between whether you love a product or don't want it in your presence.
At the hardware store earlier today I had a choice between two furniture clamps. One was 'plain vanilla' and cost significantly less, the other had a much snazzier clamp system and cost more.
The better mechanical design worked in its favor but the manufacture had also put a lot of thought into producing the clamp with a pleasing color combination, an ergonomic arrangement of the elements, the right materials for the grip all combining to produce a better product.
I bought the higher-priced clamp both for the ease I will have working with it but also because I know I will aesthetically enjoy having it in my workshop.
