Zoos, Mercy or Meanness?

That said, I disdain zoos. Yes, they serve a purpose; education, research, reproduction and preservation, but I can't think of any worse torture than keeping a wild animal locked up in captivity for our amusement.
And even though the Lincoln Park Zoo simulates habitats fairly well like big boulders for the lions and rocky pools for the seals, the enclosures are still too small for the bigger species to exercise. As a result, I saw a lot of pacing, walking in circles and sleeping going on. All looked bored, depressed and terribly lonely. This abnormal behavior is called zoochosis and the result of years of confinement.

One of my favorite Harry Potter scenes is Harry freeing the trapped boa constrictor at the zoo after Dudley has taunted him. The snake has no thought of revenge, just wants to be on his way to Brazil to see his family and heads out immediately.
Zoos might once have served a good purpose, before photography, films, and television so that people could get to know about the animal kingdom but they're no longer necessary and are now nothing but, in many cases, inhumane animal jails, animals who are jailed for no crimes, just for our 'amusement'.
If the purpose of a zoo is observation and research, it would make far more sense to have them where the animals actually live with enough space to live in dignity and based on some sort of 'catch, observe, release' system.
